Howard Webb Football Referee

The one & only, Howard Webb football referee!

Howard Webb, football referee (MBE) is our very special guest on the the most recent episode of the podcast and you can listen to both parts of this 2 part interview by clicking HERE.

We recorded this interview on a miserable Thursday night at our studios in Taunton! From experience, when you provisionally arrange a 'high profile' interview, you generally only expect to get around 20 mins of audio, but Howard was on the phone for 1 hour 16 minutes in total!

He was really open and candid about his career and I think it is fair to say, he has never really be one for wanting attention has he, but he opened up in so much detail! There is a really funny moment when he explains WHY half way through the European Cup Final in 2010 where he suddenly started to think about Alan Brazil from Talk Sport!

Martin Underhay

At a glance, you may think it is refereeing’s answer to the Chuckle Brothers! I am sure Howard Webb and Martin Underhay will be delighted by the comparison!

Our special guest in this episode of the Referees World Podcast is Martin Underhay from Weymouth. Some may describe him as a ‘poacher come game keeper’, well, Rich Melinn would because he has had the pleasure of officiating him on a number of occasions.

Martin talks about his football career and how playing at the standard he did, has helped him achieve level 3 status.

The question is, does a good footballer make a good referee? You can make your own mind up from what Martin has to say by clicking HERE.

EDDIE-HUGHES

In this episode, we give the answer to our recent competition, discuss winter pitch inspections and our special guest speaker, is Eddie Hughes (above).

Eddie retired earlier this year at the age of . . . 81 and he talks a bit about his distinguished career in great detail including, the low point, for which he is best remembered. Remember that game in 1978 between Crystal Palace & Fulham?

The photo above was posted in the Croydon Advertiser and below is a quick account of what happened in that fixture:

“Referees in the modern game get plenty of stick – but at least most of them manage the task of basic timekeeping.

However, Palace’s upcoming fixture against Fulham brings back memories of a bizarre incident almost 35 years to the day the two teams will do battle next Monday.

The Eagles and West Londoners were locked in battle when, inexplicably, referee Edward Hughes blew the full-time whistle with six minutes of the match remaining.

Mr Hughes only realised his error when the players were off the pitch and halfway down the tunnel.

He brought the teams back onto the pitch to complete the final six minutes – but, by then, half the crowd had left the ground, presumably in a confused state.”

Some great news for referee progression!

In this episode, we talk to the RDO at Surry FA, Tim Lawrence who tells us about how they are now involved with online training modules for referees. This will surely change the way in which referees of all levels progress? We would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Also, we are giving you the chance to win some stuff! Check out this little prize pack courtesy of our friends at RefChat:

In this particular episode, Ross explains a bit about his background as a referee and then talks us through the forum which has becoming increasingly popular over the last few years. Match Commentary on Referees!

The Referees World Podcast is the monthly audio magazine which offers education and training for football referees of all levels.

Every now and then we like to record on location somewhere. So, on Tuesday 22nd April we attended the Somerset Floodlit League u18’s game between Taunton Town & Chard. (For those who have just discovered the podcast , it’s worth pointing out that we are based in Somerset!)

This was an important game for the visitors because if they won, they would clinch the league title so it needed a strong team of officials. We followed the progress of L4 referee, Brian Lee and his two assistants from pre-match to final whistle.

You can listen to the latest episode which includes pre-match, interviews in the changing room before, during and after game by clicking HERE followed by match commentary on the officials by clicking HERE.

Was Rooney offside?

You may have seen the 5th round FA Cup tie between Preston North End and Manchester Utd on 16th February at Deepdale?

rooney

It ended 3-1 to Man Utd and one of the goals had much discussion as to whether Wayne Rooney was actually offside and interfering with play?

In the latest episode of the Referees World Podcast, Darren & Rich talk about this in depth along with a discussion about some Ex Premiership referees and their roles within the media now they are retired from the game.

The photo is courtesy of the Daily Mirror who claim that Rooney WAS offside! Read their report by clicking HERE.
