Howard Webb Football Referee

The one & only, Howard Webb football referee!

Howard Webb, football referee (MBE) is our very special guest on the the most recent episode of the podcast and you can listen to both parts of this 2 part interview by clicking HERE.

We recorded this interview on a miserable Thursday night at our studios in Taunton! From experience, when you provisionally arrange a 'high profile' interview, you generally only expect to get around 20 mins of audio, but Howard was on the phone for 1 hour 16 minutes in total!

He was really open and candid about his career and I think it is fair to say, he has never really be one for wanting attention has he, but he opened up in so much detail! There is a really funny moment when he explains WHY half way through the European Cup Final in 2010 where he suddenly started to think about Alan Brazil from Talk Sport!

Martin Underhay

At a glance, you may think it is refereeing’s answer to the Chuckle Brothers! I am sure Howard Webb and Martin Underhay will be delighted by the comparison!

Our special guest in this episode of the Referees World Podcast is Martin Underhay from Weymouth. Some may describe him as a ‘poacher come game keeper’, well, Rich Melinn would because he has had the pleasure of officiating him on a number of occasions.

Martin talks about his football career and how playing at the standard he did, has helped him achieve level 3 status.

The question is, does a good footballer make a good referee? You can make your own mind up from what Martin has to say by clicking HERE.

EDDIE-HUGHES

In this episode, we give the answer to our recent competition, discuss winter pitch inspections and our special guest speaker, is Eddie Hughes (above).

Eddie retired earlier this year at the age of . . . 81 and he talks a bit about his distinguished career in great detail including, the low point, for which he is best remembered. Remember that game in 1978 between Crystal Palace & Fulham?

The photo above was posted in the Croydon Advertiser and below is a quick account of what happened in that fixture:

“Referees in the modern game get plenty of stick – but at least most of them manage the task of basic timekeeping.

However, Palace’s upcoming fixture against Fulham brings back memories of a bizarre incident almost 35 years to the day the two teams will do battle next Monday.

The Eagles and West Londoners were locked in battle when, inexplicably, referee Edward Hughes blew the full-time whistle with six minutes of the match remaining.

Mr Hughes only realised his error when the players were off the pitch and halfway down the tunnel.

He brought the teams back onto the pitch to complete the final six minutes – but, by then, half the crowd had left the ground, presumably in a confused state.”

Some great news for referee progression!

tim lawrence

In this episode, we talk to the RDO at Surry FA, Tim Lawrence who tells us about how they are now involved with online training modules for referees. This will surely change the way in which referees of all levels progress? We would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Also, we are giving you the chance to win some stuff! Check out this little prize pack courtesy of our friends at RefChat:

Do you use forums?

The new episode of the Referees World Podcast is now online and you can listen to it by clicking HERE and by searching iTunes for Referees World in the podcasts section.

Love them or hate them, forums can be a very good source of information and more often than not, great conversation!

refchat

One of our favourites is REFCHAT and is run by Cornwall based referee Ross McMenemy who as you can see from his photo below, takes life very seriously!

ROSS

In this particular episode, Ross explains a bit about his background as a referee and then talks us through the forum which has becoming increasingly popular over the last few years. There is also a little shop section so you can buy some bits for your weekend manoeuvres at very competitive prices.

Definitely worth signing up if you haven’t already done so and when you listen to the episode of the podcast, you will see how useful these forums are to your domination of world refereeing!

Match Commentary on Referees!

The Referees World Podcast is the monthly audio magazine which offers education and training for football referees of all levels.

Every now and then we like to record on location somewhere. So, on Tuesday 22nd April we attended the Somerset Floodlit League u18’s game between Taunton Town & Chard. (For those who have just discovered the podcast , it’s worth pointing out that we are based in Somerset!)

This was an important game for the visitors because if they won, they would clinch the league title so it needed a strong team of officials. We followed the progress of L4 referee, Brian Lee and his two assistants from pre-match to final whistle.

You can listen to the latest episode which includes pre-match, interviews in the changing room before, during and after game by clicking HERE followed by match commentary on the officials by clicking HERE.

The Football Association’s National Referee Development Programme forms a major part of The FA’s initiative to recruit, retain and develop referees involved in 11-a-side football.

The programme, which was launched in 2011, is committed to training, retaining and developing enthusiastic and committed referees with support and coaching in a safe and constructive learning environment. The fundamental goal is to enable individuals to flourish in refereeing.

Sadly,  in January, we lost Somerset FA R.D.O. Keith Buller . . . Our thoughts are with Megan and we would like to pay tribute to Keith in this episode of the Referees World Podcast.

Always a topic for debate and you can download the LOTG but . . . is it time things were changed and do they need freshening up?

This was a recent poll on the Referees World website and the results are shown below:

Was Rooney offside?

The Referees World Podcast is a monthly audio magazine which offers training and education to football referees of all levels around the world! You can listen to the latest episode by clicking HERE.

You may have seen the 5th round FA Cup tie between Preston North End and Manchester Utd on 16th February at Deepdale?

rooney

It ended 3-1 to Man Utd and one of the goals had much discussion as to whether Wayne Rooney was actually offside and interfering with play?

In the latest episode of the Referees World Podcast, Darren & Rich talk about this in depth along with a discussion about some Ex Premiership referees and their roles within the media now they are retired from the game.

The photo is courtesy of the Daily Mirror who claim that Rooney WAS offside! Read their report by clicking HERE.

Halifax R.A. tell us their secrets!

Following on from the success of our last episode which you can listen to again by clicking HERE, we were contacted by Halifax R.A. who wanted to tell us what they were doing!

halifax ra

We had a great chat with their secretary, Arran Williams and couldn’t believe how young the team were who hold it together! It was really refreshing to hear and is definitely worth a listen because one the ‘uphill battles’ that local R.A. is up against is the perception by many that it is a bit stuffy. You can listen to the most recent episode by clicking HERE.

Referees World – new episode online now!

Since our ‘mini relaunch’ we are making a conscious effort (time permitting of course!) to make sure we have more than 1 episode of the Referees World Podcast each month!

ref poll results

So far so good . . . it’s nearly the end of November and here comes the 4th one! Click HERE.

In this episode: Darren and Rich have the results to our recent website survey about who is having the best season so far, Rich discusses a game he assessed recently with a minimal amount of free kicks and what do you do if a layer pulls down your shorts?!

Colour clash – should this happen at Select Group Level?

I couldn’t help noticing on a recent game between Aston Villa & Southampton in the Barclays Premier League that the referee, Phil Dowd on this occasion, was wearing a kit that, from a distance, made him look distinctively like a Southampton player!

phil_dowd_pic

How could something like this happen on a game at this level? I raised the point on Twitter as soon as I saw it and here are some of the responses:

phil_dowd_pic_tweets

Anyway, I decided to dig out the old L.O.T.G. just to clarify:

New episode is out now!

We recorded 3 episodes of the Referees World Podcast yesterday and the first of which is an in depth interview with the Chair of Stockport R.A. Barry Rowson. You can listen to what Barry had to tell us by clicking HERE.

stockport_ra_meeting

This was a great insight to how our colleagues in that part of the world are making a real impact with new referees and the secrets to there very successful attendance of monthly meetings.

If you would like to be featured in a future episode or tell us about what is happening at your local R.A. contact us now by clicking HERE.

How well attended is your local RA?

Rich Melinn spoke to Barry Rowson this week, the Chair at Stockport Referee Society who has agreed to be a guest on one of our next episodes of the Referees World Podcast.

stockport_ra

Based on the conversation they had, it would appear that this is a local RA which is ‘buzzing’ at the moment with an average attendance of between 70 and 80! Clearly, they have an incredibly successful formula in Stockport but how well are YOUR meetings attended?

So much can be learned and shared at these meetings, as we have discussed on previous episodes, so I am particularly keen to find out what their secret is because let’s be honest, not everyone has an attendance this healthy.

F.Y.I. we are recording again THIS COMING Tuesday, 18th November so if you have an exciting local RA, why don’t you let us know about it? You can contact us by clicking HERE.

Referees World – New Beginnings!

First of all, can we just say a HUGE thank to those of you who have listened to the podcast from day 1 and bearing with us through the lack of episodes this year. So, what are the reasons for this?

1) Both of us (Darren & Rich who present the podcast!) have had considerable changes in both our professional and personal circumstances over the last 10-12 months which has meant that recording and production time has been limited. Let’s not forget, we do this because we love refereeing!

2) Technical issues have taken its toll along the way as well and to be honest, we are not entirely sure where it all went wrong but somehow, we lost our feed to iTunes, ALL of our listening statistics and have had to learn the art of WORD PRESS (the website platform we now use)!

refchat

Anyway, things are now back on track (we hope!) and we have to say a big thanks to Ross at RefChat for helping us along the way – he is a bit more ‘techy’ than we are!

Official banned for being sexist

You would have thought that following the Richard Keys and Andy Gray V Sian Massey incident on Sky TV that sexism towards our female colleagues would have been a thing of the past BUT you certainly wouldn’t expect that kind of thing from a refereeing colleague. If you haven’t read about this, it’s definitely worth having a read by clicking HERE.

F.A. Training Video

There are many football referee training videos but here’s one we found recently that made us all smile here at Referees World!

Like we say on each episode of the podcast, if you have any videos or come across anything that we can discuss, including visuals now, send us the details by clicking HERE.
